Cabinet Accessories

June 2010

There are many types of cabinet accessories. Accent lighting adds mood and drama to the spaces outside the cabinets while other accessories help maximize the space inside. Let's take a look at some of the creative and functional devices that will help you make the most out of your cabinetry.

Lighting

Rope lighting is an inexpensive and easy addition to any kitchen needing a some subtle theatrics to the decor. Hang it under the upper cabinets to accentuate your beautiful countertops or above the cabinets for a nice crowning effect. Rope light can be purchased in various lengths, last a long time, are energy efficient and can even be plugged into a regular 120v outlet.

Puck lights offer a similar effects, but are a bit more directional. These lights are shaped a bit like a hockey puck and will have lights embedded in the bottom. Puck lights can usually be flush or surface mounted to suit your taste.

Storage

Tip-out trays help you squeeze every last inch out of your cabinets. The small space in front of your sink isn't deep enough to fit a regular drawer. Tip-out trays act like a pocket and are perfect for gloves, sponges, wash cloths and help remove some of the unsightliness from your beautiful countertop.

Drawer inserts make life easier and cut down on the clutter by organizing your utensils or tools according to shape. This helps you both place and retrieve items quickly. Dual level trays are an especially effective insert design as they add two levels of organization.

Pull-outs, Susans and Caddies not only help you get your pots and pans out of your cabinets, they help get them into space you ordinarily wouldn't be able to reach.

Blind corner systems make it easy to get items into those dead corners that occur when only one door in the corner can be opened at a time.

Lazy susans or lazy daizys can also be used in corners with dead spots. They aren't any more complicated than your run-of-the-mill table top variety, but make a big impact by giving you access to 270 degrees of space under your counter.

Caddies work well as a complement to other cabinet hardware or on their own. Many caddies mount directly to the back of the cabinet door and provide a place to hang your kitchenwares.

A pull-out table will add another work surface in your kitchen. Since space can be at a premium in the kitchen, these handy features add workspace that can be easily packed away when you're not cooking.
